About Teachers for Global Classrooms

Teachers for Global Classrooms (TGC) is a grant-funded program through the U.S. Department of State and the International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX). TGC provides educators with an intensive year-long professional development program that helps them bring a global perspective to their school communities and become leaders in global education. Upon acceptance into the program, TGC Fellows engage in four key program activities:

  • 8-week, graduate-level global education course

  • global education symposium in Washington, D.C.

  • 2 to 3-week international field experience to learn about another country's culture & education system

  • capstone project, which involves creating this Global Education Guide as a local community resource.

After completing the fellowship, TGC alumni are eligible to apply for grants and have opportunities to continue networking with other global educators.

To learn more about TGC and/or to apply for the program, visit https://www.irex.org/project/teachers-global-classrooms-program-tgc. Applications open in December.

Earthwatch Teacher Fellowships

Earthwatch's Teach Earth Program is a chance for classroom teachers to get field experience in environmental scientific inquiry so that they can take that experience back to their classrooms and students.  Any educator that does some type of environmental education in their classrooms can apply (you don't have to be a science teacher!).  Expeditions change each year, and more fellowships may be added to the website as funding comes in, so check in often!

Fund for Teachers

Is there a travel experience that would greatly improve your teaching? For example, my experience visiting schools in Indonesia helped me find ways to better support my Muslim students.  I would love to visit cultural sites in Vietnam to better understand the religions and cultures of my large Vietnamese population. If you have an idea like this, the Fund for Teachers can help make it happen.  "By trusting teachers to design unique fellowships, Fund for Teachers grants validate teachers' professionalism and leadership, as well."

Fulbright Short-Term Travel to Germany

This program  is open to elementary and secondary teachers of all subjects.  It involves travel to Germany for two weeks to explore the German education system.  Details from the website:

"In detail, the participants will receive an overview of the contemporary German school and university system while discussing the current situation in the state of Bavaria as a case-study. The seminar also analyses the recent educational reforms as a result of private and public sector demands for a workforce in a global competition. Emphasis will be placed on teacher education, effective policies to raise standards and ensure good practices as well as on exchange activities as a strategy to “internationalize” German schools. The syllabus also covers current and controversial issues such as the growing diversity of the student population and the refugee situation in Germany and Europe. The participants will also get a chance to have a look behind the scenes of school administration.
Germany’s vocational sector is unique, and a cornerstone to the success of Germany’s industry and research facilities. The American teachers are invited to experience the importance of the dual education model first-hand by visiting a vocational school and a local company. On the post-secondary level, the harmonization of higher education in the EU (“Bologna Process”) will be explained with a keen eye for its ramifications on European cooperation and exchange. The seminar will also try to highlight initiatives and processes, in which German-American relations have marked the fields of education, economy or politics."
